lawyer

lawyer
Lawyer is not normally used as a professional title in standard English, but the city attorney in The Liberation of Lord Byron Jones, by Jesse Hill Ford, is always referred to by the townspeople as ‘Lawyer Hedgepath’, and addressed in that way by many of them. This creation of a title is understandable for a man who clearly occupies an important professional position in the community, but has no accepted form of address which can be used in the same way as ‘Doctor’ or ‘Reverend’. Another lawyer in the book mentioned above is also addressed as ‘Lawyer’ + last name, and one speaker says: ‘Could you find out about the man they caught, Lawyer?’ In The Middle Man, by David Chandler, a prostitute says: ‘This is my career theyre tearing apart, Mr Lawyer,’ showing a noncename alternative where no true title exists.
